A few years back the app drawer was removed from most of the LG smartphones following the footsteps of iOS on iPhone. This time once again the gestures mode is made the default mode of navigation just like an iPhone.
On K51, there is no back button, home button, and the recent apps button. This feels quite annoying at the beginning. I was missing the back button the most. However, once we get used to the Gestures, it makes navigation easier than the home touch buttons.
If you wish, you can restore the old style of navigation. Follow the below link to enable the Back, Home, and Overview Buttons on K51 –
Before restoring the home touch buttons, you should give at least one chance to the Gestures mode –
LG K51 Gestures – How to go Back
While in the gestures mode, to go back to the previous page we need to swipe in from the right or left edge of the screen.
You can refer to the above animation.
On my LG K51, I’m on the “Sound” page of the Settings app.
Let’s swipe in from the right of the screen as marked in the above screenshot.
This back gesture brings us to the first page of the settings app.
Now, let’s swipe in from the right edge of the screen.
This brings me to the K51 home screen. You can use the back gesture anywhere on the phone. It works flawlessly.
LG K51 Gestures – How to Close apps
To view the recent background apps, we need to use the swipe up gesture. Swipe up from the bottom edge and hold the screen to view the running apps.

Swipe up and hold the screen until you see the recent app tile.
The most recent app is the “Settings” app.
To close this app we need to throw the app window in the upward direction.
The Settings app is closed now. This way we can close a selective app or hit “Clear all” to close all the apps in one go.
LG K51 Gestures – How to get to Home Screen
The circular home touch button in the middle brings us to the home screen. The same thing can be done using a swipe up gesture.
You can reach the home screen from anywhere on the phone with a single swipe from the bottom edge of the screen.
I’m using the settings app on my K51. Let’s swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen as marked in the above screenshot.
This swipe up gesture brings me to the K51 Home screen. Remember, if we swipe up and hold it shows the recent apps. However, if we swipe and leave the screen it takes us to the home screen.
LG K51 Gestures – How to Switch between running apps
The gestures mode offers us an additional functionality that’s missing in the regular mode of navigation. We can switch between the recent apps.
We need to swipe along the horizontal bar at the bottom edge of the screen to switch between the running apps. The swipe can be in the left or right direction as shown above.
We need to use the horizontal bar at the bottom edge as shown above.
Let’s swipe in the right direction.
The most recent app is the “Settings” app. I’m switching from the “Settings” page to the “Wallpaper and theme” page by swiping in the right direction along the bottom edge of the screen.
We can also swipe in the left direction to shift to another app from the “Wallpaper and theme” page.
