LG K20 Plus – How to Enable USB Debugging and Developer options

USB Debugging and OEM unlock needs to be turned on within the developer options to unlock the bootloader of LG K20 Plus. However, if you’ll look for developer options in Settings, you won’t find it anywhere.

In the earlier versions of Android, developer mode had quite a few options so it was kept visible by default. Since Lollipop, many more features are added which are meant for developers only and a normal user can do more harm than good by messing up with these settings. So keeping in mind the majority of the users its kept hidden but can be enabled quite easily with few taps on Build Number. Let’s see how to do this.

How to enable USB Debugging on LG K20 Plus

LG K20 Plus Enable Developer Options

To enable Developer Options, Click on the “Settings” icon on the home screen.

In Settings, select the “General” Tab and scroll down towards the bottom.

The last option you’ll find there is “About Phone”. Select it to open.

LG K20 Plus You are now a developer

Now click on “Software info” and look for Build number

We’ve to tap Build number 7 times to activate developer options.

Once done, it’ll say “You are now a developer!” as shown in the screenshot above.

LG K20 Plus Developer Options

Now go 2 steps back to the main settings page.

Here you’ll notice above “About Phone” a new option is visible which is “Developer options”.

LG K20 Plus Enable USB Debugging

Tap on it to open. As we’re opening it for the first time it’ll display a warning. Accept it to move further.

Now in “developer options” we’re interested in 2 things which are USB Debugging and OEM unlock.

Before turning ON “USB Debugging” make sure that your K20 Plus is not connected to PC. It would be greyed out and won’t let you enable if connected to the computer.

LG K20 Plus Enable OEM Unlock

Now look for “Enable OEM unlock” and toggle it to ON position as shown above.

If we’ve to unlock LG K20 Plus bootloader OEM unlock must be turned ON along with USB Debugging.

However, you must note that by turning on OEM unlock, Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) gets disabled, that means you won’t be prompted to verify your last synced google account if doing a hard reset with Volume Down and Power button combination.

Once you unlock the bootloader of your LG K20 Plus you cannot turn off “OEM Unlock” unless you relock the bootloader.

Now that we’ve turned on USB Debugging and OEM unlock we’re ready to Unlock LG K20 Plus Bootloader.

LG K20 Plus Downgrade Android Software Version-mp26010x to mp26010j

In most of the cases, a firmware downgrade is performed to gain root. A firmware update patches the security exploit so downgrading comes to resue.

However, in our case rooting will never be an issue thanks to the unlockable bootloader of LG K20 plus

For K20 Plus we need to downgrade only if stuck on Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) screen while doing a hard reset. To bypass the Google account verification process (FRP) on LG K20 Plus we’ve to downgrade the firmware to mp26010j. Let’s see how to do this –

How to Downgrade LG K20 Plus Android Firmware –

The first step is to boot the phone in download mode.

LG K20 Plus Download Mode Firmware Update

DOWNLOAD

LG K20 Plus LGUP Download

First of all, we’ve to install the LGUP setup file as shown above.

LG K20 Plus LGUP Installation

Finish the LGUP installation but don’t run it yet. It won’t detect the connected LG K20 Plus without the help of uppercut.

LG K20 Plus Uppercut

Now we’ve to run uppercut and it will load LGUP on its own.

Earlier, it was a pain to search for the proper DLL file as its different for every LG model.

Without the proper DLL file, LGUP cannot detect the connected phone in download mode.

Thanks to Autoprime@xda who made this one software which works for any LG phone and no more searching for a DLL file.

Open the UPPERCUT folder.

LG K20 Plus Uppercut

Double click on the Uppercut.exe file to run.

LGMP260 Uppercut

Wat till it loads LGUP.

LG K20 Plus DLL File

LGUP is loading

You can the current firmware version is showing up in LGUP

The connected phone is LGMP260 running android version MP26010x.

This is the latest LG K20 Plus software with Android Security Patch Level February 1, 2018.

We’re going to downgrade it to MP26010J.

Tap on the “3 dots” icon and browse for the downloaded kdz file for flashing.

Select MP26010j_00_0316.kdz file and OPEN it in LGUP for flashing.

The kdz file is added to LGUP.

You can notice the Flashing Process is set to “REFURBISH”

We’ve to change the flashing process from “REFURBISH” to “UPGRADE”.

Even though we’re downgrading we’ve to select UPGRADE.

Now click on “Start” to initiate the process.

At 4 % you’ll notice it says “Anti Rollback Check PASS”. This explains that the current firmware can be downgraded.

Wait for the downgrade process to complete.

At around 80% the process gets completed and the phone Reboots.

Wait till the process gets completed to 100%.

We’ve successfully downgraded LG K20 Plus from mp26010x to mp26010j.

LG K20 Plus Download Mode,Recovery Mode & Safe Mode-MP260/TP260

The three most significant modes of troubleshooting on LG K20 Plus are Safe Mode, Recovery Mode, and Download Mode. You shouldn’t perform any hardware repair until you’ve exhausted these 3 modes of troubleshooting.

In this post, we’ll learn how to enter safe mode, recovery mode, download mode and how to get the most out of them to fix any software related issue on our K20 Plus.

LG K20 Plus MP260/TP260 Recovery Mode

As the suggests, recovery mode is used to recover the phone back to the normal working state.

The recovery mode comes into play when you’re locked out.

If you’ve forgotten your lock screen password, pin, pattern or knock code and even your recovery email is not letting you in, then your last resort is hard reset via recovery mode.

We’ve to use the hardware keys (Volume Down + Power) to boot into recovery mode. Let’s see how to do this –

To enter LG K20 Plus recovery mode –

Power OFF your phone

Press the Volume Down + Power button, as soon as the LG logo appears on screen, temporarily release the power button and hold it again.

LG K20 Plus Recovery Mode

Now, keep on holding the Power + Volume Down button until you’re on the Factory Data Reset screen as visible in the screenshot above.

This white Factory data reset screen is the recovery mode.

In recovery mode, touch doesn’t work.

There are only 2 options “No(Exit) and “Yes”. To move up and down, we’ve to use the volume keys and to confirm our selection we can press the power key.

So, in order to perform a hard reset move down to “Yes” with volume down key and confirm with Power button.

On the next screen, again move down to “Yes” and press the power key to initiate the hard reset process.

This step will erase all your data stored on the internal storage (phone memory). However, if you’re locked out then this is the only way out.

LG K20 Plus MP260/TP260 Download Mode

We need to enter download mode to flash stock firmware / ROM –

Stock ROM can help you in restoring your bricked K20 plus back to working state.

Stock firmware can also be flashed to upgrade or downgrade the current firmware.

It can also unroot your K20 Plus back to stock condition for warranty reasons.

To boot your K20 Plus in Download Mode –

Power OFF your phone

Insert one end of the USB data cable to your K20 Plus. Press the Volume UP button.

Without releasing the Volume UP key,  connect the other end of the USB data cable to the computer.

LG K20 Plus Download Mode

The phone will boot into Download Mode with dark background as shown above.

After few seconds the display message will change from “Download Mode” to “Firmware Update”

We are now ready to flash a K20 plus stock firmware in Download Mode.

LG K20 Plus Safe Mode

In Safe mode downloaded 3rd party apps are disabled. If your K20 plus is acting abnormally such as overheating or slowing down. Then before doing a factory data reset, we can check in safe mode if some installed app is the cause of this trouble.
